Glyphosat is a broad spectrum herbicide used all over the world. It blocks an enzyme that is responsible for the production of certain amino acids and in this way it stops the metabolic processes of the plant.
It is sold under a lot of different brand names. One of them is "Roundup", which is used to protect the plants against weeds and before a harvest to guarantee a standardized rate of growth of the plants in the field.
Mostly this pesticide is used for cereals, grains and oil seeds. It is used as a herbicide before sowing or at maturity just before germination. Before sowing it destroys the weeds in order to create optimal crop conditions. As a maturity agent it is used shortly before harvest. The aim is to get standardized plants in the field to make harvesting easier. Another important aspect of its use is glyphosate-resistant plants. These plants have been genetically modified. So it is possible to destroy the weeds without hurting the crop. These plants are being grown mainly in Asia and South America. Since glyphosate is used worldwide in many different crops, it can be detected in many foods.
