food: Analysis of melamin

analysis: organic contaminants

In 2008 there was a big melamine-  in-baby-food scandal. More than 300,000 children became ill. The reason was the illegal addition of melamine to milk products which were used for baby food. Melamine contains a high amount of nitrogen and nitrogen is the molecule which is analysed to determine the amount of protein in food. First the  nitrogen is analysed and then it is possible to calculate the amount of protein. So melamine was added to fake a higher protein content  than there really is in the product.  Melamine can cause kidney disease and kidney stones in babies and small children.
