Listera are psychotrops, which means they are also able to grow a at low temperature such as in the fridge. You can detect them in the feces of animals. During slaughtering they can get into the meat. Normally they are present in raw food. In heated or salted meat there are normally no listera. There can be a secondary contamination while processing the food for example. They can get into fruits and vegetables with animal waste water. They can indicate poor hygienic standards during the processing steps. Depending on one's general state of health, an infection can have very different results.
