From a health and environmental point of view, many flame retardants are critical. At high concentrations in the ambient air, they cause irritation of the mucous membranes or provoke respiratory problems. The way they work is based on the fact that the phosphorus flame retardant together with the substrate form a barrier in case of fire. This barrier prevents any further contact of the substrate with oxygen. The following phosphorus flame retardants are used: Polyurethane foam for furniture; in plastic housings of electrical appliances; in floor coverings (PVC or carpet ); cable insulation. The analysis of phosphorus flame retardants in dust gives an overview of the total amount in the living room. Correct sampling is very important. Please read the instructions in the download area.
