PCBs were used in paints, sealants, hydraulic fluid, and similar products. In 2001 consumption was banned because the substances were found to be carcinogenic. They were used extensively, so these compounds can be still detected in many places. Dust is generally a fine particle abrasion of everything around us. So a test for PCBs in dust provides a good indication of the contamination in our surroundings.
