colony count in tap water at 22°C and 36°C

analysis: microbiology

If the colony count increases at 22°C and 36°C, this does not give us any information about specific pathogens, but ist does give us an indication of a possible microbial contamination of the water supply system.

The increased colony count can have many different causes: bad water treatment, building of an organic film inside the pipe, possible pipe breaks or stagnation of the water in the pipe system. If the count is higher than the limits set, this does not necessarily mean there is a health hazard, but the cause of the high colony number should be checked. The treatment will depend on the causes identified. Such treatments as intensive irrigation or targeted disinfection may be necessary in the affected line areas
